Acclaimed development pioneers have named recipients of the world's top development grant
The Edison Grants recognize recognized pioneers Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, and Dr. Laurie Leshin, supervisor of NASA's Fly Drive Research Center, to be awarded a 2024 Edison Accomplishment Grant

The Edison Awards™, an annual competition for new item size and improvement in governance, promotion, human-centered plan and development, announces acclaimed trailblazer Gwynne Shotwell, president and chief operating officer of SpaceX and Dr. Laurie Leshin, supervisor of NASA's Stream Impetus Research (JPL) facility, as 2024 Edison Accomplishment Grant recipients.Established in 1987, the Edison Awards™ are named after famed designer Thomas Edison, and the Edison Accomplishment Grant honors remarkable pioneers who have made tremendous and an ongoing commitment to development through one's profession. Quite frankly, the honor commends those whose achievements act as motivation across all fields of advancement and knowledge to positively impact the world at large.

Dr. Laurie Leshin is a distinguished geochemist and space researcher with a wide initiative residency in the scientific community and government, including senior positions at NASA, the leading lady who will serve in the lead capacity of NASA's JPL. Leshin was a leader of the Worcester Polytechnic organization from 2014 to 2022, and recently became a dean of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Establishment School of Science. At NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center from 2005 to 2008, she served as supervisor of science, then deputy chief of science and innovation, management engineering, engineering and execution of more than 50 Earth and space flight projects. In 2010, Leshin became the Associate Supervisor of the Investigation Frameworks Mission Directorate at NASA Base Camp, which manages future human spaceflight. Her various awards include NASA's Outstanding Initiative Award for Decoration and Distinguished Public Assistance Award, and the Meteor Society's Nier Award for Outstanding Exploration by a Researcher Under 35. The Global Galactic Association named the space rock 4922 Leshin to honor its commitment to planetary science. Leshin also encouraged President George W. Hedge's space strategy and President Barack Obama named her to the Smithsonian Foundation's Public Air and Space Historical Center's warning board.
As President and COO of SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell is responsible for day-to-day operations and handles all key client relationships to help grow the organization. Shotwell, who joined SpaceX in 2022 as vice president of business improvement, has been instrumental in creating the Bird of prey vehicle family manifest that has grown to more than 270 dispatches, representing approximately $30 billion in business. Prior to her work at SpaceX, Shotwell spent more than 10 years at the Aviation Organization, where she stood firmly across the Space Frameworks Designing, Innovation and Venture The Board. She was also promoted to chief specialist for the MLV-class satellite program, handled a milestone for the Government Flight Organization in commercial space transportation, and completed an extensive room strategy review for NASA's future interest in space transportation. Shotwell received her lone ranger and graduate degrees from Northwestern College in mechanical design and applied mathematics, with honors, and serves on their board of trustees.
