The review, distributed in the open-access journal PLOS ONE, studied north of 1,300 cat owners, most of whom reduced their meat consumption. A small proportion (9%) of these owners cared for their cats on a vegetarian diet and opposed their own dietary choices.
The basic results could cause a stir, as felines on the vegetarian lover's slimming allegedly showed some medical benefits. Owners detailed fewer visits to the vet, reduced medication use, and a sense of better overall health. But here's where things get interesting: these differences weren't measurably critical, meaning they could have been simple incidents.
When we looked further into the information, specialists found that certain diseases were more normal in felines who cared for meat-based calories, while others were more regular in vegetable lovers who cared for cats. However, none of these differences reached measurable significance, with the exception of a slightly higher incidence of kidney disease in the vegetarian collection care.
One significant limitation of this study is that it was unable to determine exactly what these cats were eating. Some could enjoy significant treats or upgrades that could affect their well-being. The review also didn't say how long these cats stayed on their particular diet, and the lack of infections may leave some room for it to manifest.
Specialists also point out that, depending exclusively on the owner, the assessment of well-being revealed can be emotional and one-sided. They focused on the fact that great wellness isn't just about fewer vet visits or fewer prescriptions.
All in all, would it be a good idea for you to switch your feline companion to a veggie diet? Not so fast.
The review, sponsored by pro-plant association ProVeg Global, leaves us with more questions than we answer. It adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that a vegetarian diet is unlikely to be as harmful to cats as has recently been accepted. Larger studies, including clinical preliminary results and direct estimates of well-being, are needed for a clearer picture.
