TL;DR

Apple iPhone 15 or higher and iPhone 15 Master Max 2

  • Various images of alleged fake units of the iPhone 16 series have appeared on the web, hinting at several key updates.
  • Expert iPhones could have larger screen sizes, while non-Master iPhones seem to be getting a different camera design.
  • All iPhone 16 series models could feature an additional camera-focused button alongside the Activity button.

Amidst conflicting reports on whether the upcoming iPhone 16 series will be a gradual update or a huge refresh, images of alleged iPhone 16 series mockups have surfaced, possibly confirming some major hardware changes.

These leaked images, shared on Weibo and Majin Bu on X (formerly Twitter), apparently confirm some of the rumors swirling around the iPhone 16 series. While they should be taken with a grain of salt, there are some energizing changes in these images.

We could be getting the biggest iPhone yet

Right off the bat, the iPhone 16 Master and iPhone 16 Star Max could still be better. Past reports have guaranteed that Apple may scale back the bezels on these phones to account for the larger screen area without essentially increasing the phone's actual size. Despite the fake units showing a discernible size difference between the iPhone 15 Genius and 16 Expert placed side by side.

This would confirm past reports of a jump from 6.1 crawl to 6.3 crawl for the iPhone 16 Genius and from 6.7 to 6.9 crawl for the iPhone 16 Master Max. With this screen size, the iPhone 16 Star Max could turn into the biggest iPhone to date, in any case fueling rumors of a new "Ultra" iPhone moniker.

Non-Genius iPhones also get major benefits

The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 or more should have their case sizes (6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively), but may gain an element already limiting the Expert line: the activity button. This button replaced the silent slider on Genius iPhones last year, offering improved alternative ways to silence the phone.

Another interesting change is the camera format on the iPhone 16. The leaked images show a game plan with the camera facing upwards, which is a departure from the slanted format seen on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15. While this may seem like a step backwards, the way it looks more seasoned iPhone X plan from 2017, bits of gossip suggest the change will allow Apple to introduce spatial video recording capabilities with the base iPhone models.

Another year, another new iPhone button?

Perhaps the most intriguing addition across all four iPhone 16 models appears to be the new "Catch" button located below the power button on the right side. While its exact utility remains under wraps, theory suggests it will be dedicated to camera tasks.

Unlike the various buttons, it appears to sit flush with the edge, suggesting a potential capacitive nature. This could actually open up features like centering the camera or swipe gestures to control zoom, but that remains a hypothesis for now.

At this point, it appears that this new button will also be available on each of the four iPhone models this year. We've recently seen a few alleged case leaks on the X that seem to confirm the presence of an additional button on the 2024 iPhones.

With a potential increase in screen size and a mysterious new button, Apple seems poised to generate a lot of buzz when the iPhone 16 series is formally announced shortly.
